A 20-day bikepacking lap of Tasmania

Stay on the Black Shit came to life when we decided to turn our lap of Tasmania by bike into a hard-copy book, something with a bit more meaning than letting it disappear into the endless scroll of social media.

This trip threw everything at us: rain, hail, wind, and even snow, in true Tasmanian style. The name of the book came about because it’s incredibly easy to get distracted by your surroundings (the scenery, the wildlife) and just as easy to slip off the tarmac and into the shoulder.

So pour yourself a cuppa, kick back, and let us take you on a photographic journey through one of the most wild places on earth.

Justy & Mitch

Mates since their BMX days, Justin Bumpstead and Mitch Wood rode a 1,176 km bikepacking loop of Tasmania over 20 days in October and November 2025: up the east coast from Hobart, through Derby and Cradle Mountain, down the wild west coast and back. Mitch shot most of the landscapes, and Justy most of the wildlife and the drone footage.

Inside the book

Maria Island’s painted cliffs, a 120 km day into a headwind, Cradle Mountain buried in November snow, a night that snapped the tent poles, and the snowstorm at Derwent Bridge that nearly took our fingers. Told in our words, with photos from both of us and a lot of phone snaps from the road.
